Corn Islands

‘Many have claimed but never really conquered’

Brief fact about Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast: It was declared an Autonomous Region (RA) in 1987 and was divided into the North & South. The Region Autonoma Atlantico Norte (RAAN) & the Region Autonoma Atlantico Sur (RAAS)

The Corn Islands belong to RAAS and the distance from Bluefields—the city of RAAS in the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua—is approximately 70 km. The islands are truly unique on their own.

Little Corn is the real hide away with almost complete autonomy and bohemians have made a quiet & artistic haven of Little Corn.

Big Corn has the airport, bank, bigger hotels, concrete road and taxis. There are daily flights to Big Corn from Managua and the big boats run at least once a week from Bluefields. A boat trip takes between 4 and 7 hours depending on the condition of the weather.

Corn Island and Little Corn Island are beautiful unspoiled Caribbean islands that offer more than just great swimming and snorkeling.   English is spoken on the islands but for the first time visitor it can be hard to understand. When communicating with the locals, just repeat yourself and ask them to speak slowly and you will have no problem being understood or understanding what they are saying.

The biggest festival on the islands is Crab Soup Day on August 27th. The celebration is for the freeing of the slaves by the British in 1841.
